We speak of the cost of living, without discomfort. It means that we must pay money to be alive, a definite fee for being in the world, with a heavy Entrance Fee. Everyone must make a living rather than make a Life. What is he going to be? it is asked of boys, for it is understood that it is not sufficient that he shall be himself - only a girl is permitted to say that she already is. I was not making a living at all well by jogging along here, but I could not help feeling Alive, the freedom of the fields, the freedom of the sky, the freedom of movement gratuitously bestowed upon me - far more substantial that if I had been given the Freedom of the City of Birmingham, or had had pressed into my hands huge Atlantic Charters and other paper monuments to the perfidy of Man.[p. 39, 1]
