One way to capture screenshots when using the i3 window
manager is by installing and using
scrot. Scrot is a command
line printscreen tool which allows you to capture the entire
screen or just part of it, similar to Gadwin Printscreen on Windows.
For example, a command to capture a selection of the screen
and move it to
scrot -s 'screenshot_%Y%m%d_%H%M%S.png' -e 'mv $f ~/printscreens/'
If you’d like to name the file differently then read about the
naming conventions in
You could bind this to the printscreen key (Prt Sc) on your keyboard by editing your i3 config and adding:
bindsym --release Print exec "scrot -s 'screenshot_%Y%m%d_%H%M%S.png' -e 'mv $f ~/printscreens/'"
